The inception of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) dates back to December 20, 1987, as authorized by SRO No. 303/Act/87/MVRT/1E-7/84(Part), in accordance with Section 2A of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1983 (Amended 1987). Operational since January 1988, its core mandate is to ensure efficient management, discipline, and safety within Bangladesh's road transport sector.

Originally under the purview of the Ministry of Communications, now known as the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, BRTA's initial responsibility was the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1983. Presently, it functions under the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Act 2017, which aims at executing the Road Transport Act, 2018.BRTA's overarching vision is to establish a contemporary, environmentally sustainable, and digitally integrated road transport system that prioritizes safety and organization.
