Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital is the largest children's hospital in Bangladesh, providing tertiary-level care with a capacity of 640 beds. Established in March 1972, just a few months after the liberation of Bangladesh, it was the first hospital in the country dedicated solely to the care of children. Initially supported by a few voluntary organizations and the Government of Bangladesh, the hospital began its operations in a private house in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, with 50 indoor beds. Around the same time, its outpatient department (OPD) was set up in a tent in the nearby Sukrabad area.
Financial support for the hospital's early operations came from "Save the Children Fund, UK," and later from "World Vision, Bangladesh." In December 1974, the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, approved a scheme to construct a new 250-bed children's hospital, expandable to 650 beds. With approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the hospital's location was shifted in March 1975 to its current site at Sher-e-Barigla Nagar, Shyamoli, Dhaka.
Dhaka Shishu Hospital began operations at this new site in June 1977. The construction was funded by government grants and the Dhaka Shishu Hospital Trust Fund, accumulated through donations, two public lotteries, and concerts. A committee formed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare supervised the project, with key contributions from Late Prof. Tofayel Ahmed, the Founder Member Secretary of the hospital's Management Board.
On January 17, 2012, the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for a new 9-storied building to expand the hospital's capacity. The same day, she also inaugurated the Paediatric Cardiac Center, equipped with cardiac surgery facilities, a cath-lab, and a cardiac ICU, marking the first of its kind for children in Bangladesh.Dhaka Shishu Hospital has a rich history of service and continues to play a crucial role in providing specialized healthcare to children, leading the way in pediatric medicine and contributing to the well-being of the nation's youngest citizens.
