Welcome to the website of ASA, a leading Microfinance Institution (MFI) recognized for its exceptional management and dedication to improving the lives of those at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid. Since its establishment in 1978, ASA has been committed to creating a society free from poverty and economic disparity.
Originally focused on raising awareness and forming groups among the poor for integrated development, ASA shifted its focus to micro-lending in 1991 after a decade of grassroots experience. Through innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable microfinance approaches, ASA gained international recognition, being named the most efficient MFI in the world by Forbes magazine in 2007 and receiving awards such as the "Banking at the bottom of the pyramid" from the Financial Times and International Finance Corporation in 2008.
Currently, ASA serves over five million people in Bangladesh and other developing countries, with cumulative loan disbursements totaling BDT 787 billion (US$ 10.12 billion) up to December 2013. The organization maintains impressive operational self-sufficiency (OSS) at 202.72%, financial self-sufficiency (FSS) at 127.03%, and a loan recovery rate of 99.63%.
ASA's impact extends beyond Bangladesh, with involvement in UNDP Micro-Start programs in the Philippines and Nigeria, as well as providing technical assistance in various countries including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. These efforts have effectively contributed to achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through poverty alleviation initiatives.
In addition to its microfinance program, ASA operates numerous non-financial programs such as Combined Health and Education, Health Awareness, Physiotherapy, Primary Healthcare, Eye Treatment Camps, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), benefiting thousands of underprivileged individuals with resources from the organization.
