The Bangladesh Forest Department first initiated mangrove afforestation in newly accreted land along the coastal belt in 1966, aiming to provide better protection from tidal surges and cyclones for coastal communities. Recognizing the success of this project, the Government transferred about 500,000 hectares of coastal areas to the Ministry of Environment and Forests for coastal afforestation and declared it as reserved forest under section 4 of the Forest Act. As of 2016, 200,000 hectares of mangroves had been planted and it is one of the largest coastal afforestation programmes in the world.
