When Stories Refuse to End
I have a world of my own—Only my 'Own'
A world filled with the gentle scent of Catkin-
Where the fragrance of kadam flowers sways in the breeze.
Banalata Sen of Natore arrives,
I share with her, over cups of tea,
A thousand tales—if not more.
Suddenly, I ask, Are you or Suchétana?
Is Natore or The land of cinnamon groves?
Her eyes hold a tranquil mystery—
Fatigued, yet serene.
No reply escapes from her lips.
Who else has seen such eyes—
Other than Jibanananda?
Eyes like a bird’s nest,
Where, amidst life’s endless weariness,
Jibanananda once found a fleeting moment of peace.
The sweet, earthy scent after rain—
Feels so deeply my own!
Such a fragrance makes my head spin,
Draws me closer, holds me tight.
My mind swirls with endless thoughts—
Do we truly desire what we seek?
I wander through civilizations—
From Sumerian to the Western-
And when I meet Oedipus,
I ask him: Fate or free will?
He only offers a faded smile—no answer.
His blind eyes stir my heart,
And I wish I could borrow
P.B. Shelley’s eyes—
A blaze of supernatural fire—
Just for him.
Wandering on, I find Rabindranath,
Still in Jorasako's Thakur Bari—
But weary, damp, and crumbling,
Much like Mamata Di's house.
With curious eyes, I ask him—
A short story—does it ever truly end?
Turning back, I find my own short story,
Lovingly crafted—
Yet slain by my own hands.
Sometimes, even in destruction,
There is joy—
Or an unbearable weight one must endure.
Manik Babu still sits at 'Ketupur Ghat'
Lost in thought.
I call out, And then?
His questioning gaze understands—
What else but Kuber and Kopila?
His enthusiastic eyes, without words, seem to say—
Imagine what you will; not everyone likes a story to end.
Smiling, I bid farewell,
But before I leave,
I leave behind a question—
Is that really true?
