Cox's Bazar Government Women's College holds the unique distinction of being the only institution dedicated to higher education for women in the picturesque district of Cox's Bazar. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty and the world's longest unbroken beach, Cox's Bazar is a vital contributor to Bangladesh's economy, thanks to its thriving industries such as fisheries, salt production, shrimp farming, timber, agriculture, and tourism. Despite these advantages, the education of women in the district had historically lagged behind, with limited opportunities for girls to pursue higher studies without traveling to other parts of the country.
This disparity inspired the establishment of Cox's Bazar Women's College in 1986, spearheaded by the late Osman Sarwar Alam Chowdhury—a revered politician, educationist, philanthropist, former Member of Parliament, and ambassador. His vision, along with support from local educationists and community leaders, transformed the dream of a dedicated women's college into reality. The college's journey began with a commitment to promoting virtue and enlightenment among young women, attracting support from a wide array of stakeholders, from government officials to international donors like the Bavarian Red Cross in Germany.
The turning point for the college came on March 16, 1997, when the Ministry of Education announced its nationalization, officially taking place on April 7, 1997. This marked a significant milestone, leading to a series of successes and improvements in the following years. One of the college's early achievements came in the year 2000 when Farzia Akhtar Rimi, a student of Cox's Bazar Women's College, achieved remarkable success by securing the fifth position in the Chittagong Education Board's merit list and third among girls, reinforcing the college's reputation for academic excellence.
Today, Cox's Bazar Government Women's College offers a range of academic disciplines, including humanities, science, and business education. With a dedicated and highly skilled teaching staff, the college continues to grow and expand, creating new opportunities for female students. The recent construction of a new hostel building and a Shaheed Minar on campus are further signs of progress, reflecting the college's enduring commitment to fostering a learning environment that empowers women and advances education in the Cox's Bazar district.Under the leadership of experienced principals, talented vice-principals, and knowledgeable teachers, the college is transforming the educational landscape for women in Cox's Bazar, paving the way for generations of students to achieve their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
