Established in 1978, the Department of Textiles was founded with the mission to develop, expand, and enhance the textile industry's potential in Bangladesh. Recognizing the pivotal role of the textile sector in the country's economic development and employment generation, the department is dedicated to fostering its growth and ensuring its competitiveness on the global stage.With approximately 84% of the country's export earnings derived from the textile sector, the government has outlined a vision to fortify and bolster this vital industry. To achieve this vision, the department is committed to implementing strategic plans and initiatives outlined in the government's manifesto.

A cornerstone of the department's efforts is the establishment of educational institutions focused on textile education and training. With 41 Textile Vocational Institutes, 11 Textile Diploma Institutes, and 9 Textile Engineering Colleges, the department aims to produce skilled technicians, supervisors, diploma holders, and graduate-level engineers to meet the industry's demand.In collaboration with the Bangladesh Technical Education Board and universities, the department ensures the quality of textile education by formulating relevant curriculum and standards. Additionally, ongoing projects are underway to construct new textile educational institutions, with a total investment of Tk. 1698 crores.

As the patron authority of the textile industry, the Department of Textiles plays a pivotal role in providing technical advice and guidance to industrialists, facilitating the establishment of new textile enterprises, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations through rigorous inspection processes.Moving forward, the department is poised to play an even more dynamic role in the growth and development of the textile industry, with a firm commitment to collaboration and cooperation from all stakeholders.
