The University Women's Federation College was established in July 1965, in a rented house on Road No. 6, Dhanmondi. Interestingly, this house was the residence of the mother of martyr Jahanara Imam. Mrs. Taslima Abed, a key member of the founding organization, along with Dr. Malika Al Razi, were instrumental in setting up the college. The founders' primary goal was to support women in achieving economic independence by offering them educational opportunities, particularly in commerce. This institution holds the distinction of being the first women's commerce college in Bangladesh.
Although the college is steeped in history, constraints related to accommodation initially limited its expansion into other disciplines, such as science, and prevented the introduction of Bachelor (Honors) or Pass courses. In 1972, however, the college received permission to offer a Degree (Pass) in Arts, and in 1993, it began offering a Degree (Pass) in Commerce. The academic year 2000-2001 saw the introduction of Higher Secondary Science, while 2004-2005 marked the addition of Honors courses in five subjects: English, Management, Marketing, Social Work, and Political Science.
The college’s mission is to deliver high-quality education and childcare in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment, laying the groundwork for lifelong learning. Its vision is to create a community where all students feel valued, respected, and inspired to reach their full potential. With a legacy of empowering women and promoting education, the University Women's Federation College continues to be a beacon of opportunity for young women in Bangladesh.
