The inception of Calcutta Aliya Madrasah in 1780 marked the formal introduction of the Aliya-style madrasa education system in the Indian subcontinent. Over time, this educational model spread across various regions, including undivided Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and Tripura.
Following the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, under the visionary leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, concerted efforts were made to modernize and revitalize madrasa education. In line with this vision, the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board was established, commencing its operations at the Government Madrasa-e-Alia campus in Dhaka.
In 1978, the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board underwent restructuring through the enactment of the Madrasa Education Ordinance, paving the way for its reorganization. Subsequently, in June 1979, the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board attained autonomous status, heralding a new chapter in its journey. Since then, the Board has been dedicatedly fulfilling its mandate, overseeing and enhancing madrasa education across Bangladesh.
